Woman hangs self over dowry harassment

HYDERABAD: A housewife committed suicide due to alleged harassment by her husband for additional dowry at their residence at Ranga Nagar in Musheerabad late on Wednesday night. Police said that M Jyothi, 25, committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling at around 12 in the midnight when her husband, M Shiva, a salesman in a private company, and their two daughters were sleeping in another room.
According to the woman’s family, Shiva and Jyothi had married out of love four years ago. Shiva was reportedly harassing her for dowry over the past few months and even assaulted her physically, police said. On Wednesday morning, the couple had a heated argument once again. One of their daughters had chicken pox and the couple had a tiff over who should bathe the child. Later in the night, she committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling. She, however, did not leave any suicide note. Based on a complaint by Jyothi's family, a case under section 304-B (dowry death) of IPC was registered by police.
