Vachana exponent Halakatti remembered

Dharwad: FG Halakatti, popularly known as the father of vachana literature, has played a pivotal role in protecting and promoting the literary form, said Uma Bagalkot, junior training officer at the Government ITI, Kittur.
Delivering a special lecture organised to mark the birth anniversary of FG Halakatti by the district administration and the department of Kannada and culture at Alur Bhavan here on Monday, Bgalkot said Halakatti collected, classified, translated and published numerous vachanas of the 12th century Sharanas.
Halakatti also explained the importance of vachanas through ‘Shivanubhava’ and ‘Nava Karnataka’ publications, Uma said.
Researcher Veeranna Rajur said Halakatti not only protected and promoted vachana literature, but also lived the life of a sharana, as ordained by vachanas.
Dr Da Raa Bendre National Memorial Trust chairman Danayya Mahantayya Hiremath, Ishwar Kadlimatti, Arati Devashikhamani and others also spoke.
