‘Literary criticism was life for Amur’
Dharwad: Rich tributes were paid to renowned literary critic Professor GS Amur at the valedictory of the writers' birth centenary celebrations organised jointly by GB Joshi Memorial Trust, GS Amur Birth Centenary Celebration Committee and Dr Annajirao Sirur Auditorium Trust at Srujana auditorium in Dharwad on Thursday.Writer Lakshmeesha Tolpadi, who was the chief guest at the function, said criticism was Swadharma (inherent duty) for Amur."Interpreting Jnanpith laureate Da Raa Bendre's literature in its entirety is difficult. It requires a lot of preparation. Our study must become a self-study. Amur helped us to understand Bendre's works deeply and clearly," Tolpadi elaborated. He said criticism must face the challenge of self-study, and Amur did exactly that. "When self-study changes, so does one's personality," Tolpadi analysed. In the introductory remarks, writer Rāghavendra Patil said that Amur entered the field of criticism to bring modern Kannada literature closer to the people. "He had dedication, talent, erudition, and analytical strength. He approached the task of criticism as a sacred vow," he said."A critic must have a deep concern for literature and culture — Amur certainly did have it. His criticism was a blend of aesthetic and literary analysis," Patil explained.Writer Jayant Kaikini, who delivered the valedictory address, said Amur gave literary criticism a new dimension. His writings reflected a deep awareness of life, he said."Amur wrote with fearless honesty about what he believed in. His work heightened our sensitivity and gave us freedom. Young generations should be drawn to read literary criticism," Jayant added.GM Hegde, Manu Baligar, Jayant Amur, MG Hegde, Harsh Dambal, Lohit Naikar and members of Amur's family recollected their association with the eminent writer.
