Indi stands out as Karnataka’s only constituency without ministerial berth

Vijayapura: The Indi assembly constituency in Vijayapura district holds a unique place in Karnataka’s political history — not for producing chief ministers or heavyweight ministers, but for never securing a ministerial berth despite decades of electoral participation.

The constituency has existed since 1957 and has witnessed Assembly elections in 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2013, 2018 and 2023. Several influential leaders have represented the constituency over the decades, yet none from Indi has found a place in the state cabinet in Karnataka’s political history.

Mallappa Karabasappa Surpur, RR Kallur, Ravikant Patil and Yashwantraogouda Patil were each elected three times from the constituency. Gavisiddappagouda Patil of Chandakavathe, NS Khed and Sarvabhouma Bagali were elected once each. However, none among them was inducted into the cabinet.

What makes Indi’s case particularly striking is that legislators from every other Assembly constituency in Vijayapura district have served as ministers at various points. Leaders such as Ramesh Jigajinagi from Babaleshwar, MC Managuli and RB Choudhari from Sindgi, ML Ustad from Bijapur, BM Patil and MB Patil from Tikota, BS Patil Sasanur, BS Patil Managuli and Shivanand Patil from Basavana Bagewadi, and CS (Appaji) Nadgouda, JS Deshmukh from Muddebihal, among others, have all held ministerial positions.

Political observers point out that among Karnataka’s 224 Assembly constituencies, Indi remains the lone constituency yet to receive cabinet representation, making it a rare political exception in the state.

Interestingly, the constituency did have ministerial representation during the Mysore State era. Mallappa Surpur served in the cabinets of Nijalingappa and BD Jatti, while Gavisiddappagouda Patil became a minister during SR Kanthi’s tenure in 1962. However, after the state was renamed Karnataka, despite successive govts led by leaders including Veerendra Patil, Devaraj Urs, R Gundu Rao, Ramakrishna Hegde, SR Bommai, SM Krishna, Veerappa Moily, S Bangarappa, HD Deve Gowda, JH Patel, HD Kumaraswamy, BS Yediyurappa, Sadanand Gowda, Jagadish Shettar, Basavaraj Bommai and Siddaramaiah, Indi remained unrepresented in the cabinet.

With CM-elect DK Shivakumar’s swearing-in and cabinet formation gathering momentum, questions are once again being raised in political circles whether sitting MLA Yashwantraogouda Patil may finally end Indi’s long wait for ministerial representation.
