Debt of gratitude: Alumni gift car to teacher who shaped their lives
Haveri: Over 1,000 alumni of Kumareshwara High School, run by the Kumareshwara Vidyavardhaka Trust in Hangal, came together to host a grand farewell for retiring teacher CS Vastrad—an event that later became the talk of the district.
The farewell, held on May 30, reflected the ‘Guru–Shishya’ tradition and marked a proud moment for the trust. A key highlight was the presentation of a new Maruti Suzuki Swift by Naveen Hulihalli, an alumnus from the 2007 SSLC batch. The vehicle was formally handed over in the presence of Sri Gurusidda Rajyogindra Swami of Kumareshwar Mutt, Hangal.
Alumni from several batches attended the event, filling the school campus to honour Vastrad and reconnect with their classmates. Many shared memories of his strict discipline and the life lessons he imparted. Naveen, who now works in an MNC in Bengaluru, had lost his father during childhood and struggled to continue his education due to poverty. Vastrad supported him financially and even conducted classes during holidays for students’ welfare.
“Vastrad didn’t just teach us from textbooks; he taught us how to navigate life. He was not just a teacher but also a parent to me until I completed my postgraduation. I wanted to do something that reflected how much his guidance changed my life. This car is a token of my lifelong gratitude,” Hulihalli said.
As the ribbon-wrapped car was driven onto the stage, Naveen handed over the keys to Vastrad in the presence of the swami, trust officials, and the public. “I only did my duty. Seeing 1,000 of my students gathered here, along with the swami’s blessings, is the greatest reward. Naveen’s gesture has left me speechless. Meeting all my students again brought back many classroom memories. They have always been obedient,” Vastrad said.
