Dharwad: Rich tributes were paid to renowned critic Professor GS Amur at a function to inaugurate the literary giant's birth centenary celebration year organised jointly by the GS Amur Birth Centenary Celebration Committee and GB Joshi Memorial Trust at Kulapurohita Alur Venkatrao Bhavan here on Sunday.
The speakers discussed different facets of Prof Amur, explained how he stood out differently from other scholars & critics and hailed his contributions to Kannada and English literature.
Inaugurating the function, writer HS Raghavendra Rao said the study of Amur's literature should not end with the celebration of his birth centenary but should be continued in the interest of literature. He hailed Amur's talent for creating new critical frameworks and said Amur was responsible for expanding the scope of Kannada literary criticism.
Writer SR Vijayshankar said Amur had a classical approach in his criticism and had developed the habit of dissecting a literary work in divisions and then analysing it.
Professor NS Gundur narrated how Amur vouched for translating literary works. "Initially, Amur held a strong opinion that English works should be translated into Kannada. However, later he accepted that to introduce the rich Kannada literature and culture to the world, Kannada literary works should be translated into English," Gundur said.
Critic TP Ashok narrated how Amur, besides being an eminent, serious critic, was also a man with a great sense of humour. He said there are world-class literary works in Kannada but in the absence of economic and political support, they have not been made known to the world. Prof Rajendra Chenni, MS Ashadevi, MG Hegde and Shridhar Hegde Bhadran took part in an interaction session on Amur's works and his insights.
