SILCHAR: The Citizen’s Rights Preservation Committee (CRPC), Assam, has demanded relief for genuine citizens excluded from the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) and getting rid of “wild allegations” regarding their citizenship that resulted in mental and physical harassment. The CRPC officials submitted a memorandum to Vivek Joshi, the Registrar General of India, in New Delhi.

Sadhan Purkayastha, Assam secretary general of CRPC, on Sunday said: “The official notification of the final NRC was published on August 31, 2019 to give relief to genuine citizens and also to get rid of all allegations. But till date, the issue is pending. The newly appointed RGI is clueless about the entire NRC exercise.”

In the memorandum, the CRPC functionary said their organisation has also demanded immediate resolution in cases related to the complications in issuing Aadhaar cards to those excluded from NRC. “The final NRC, which was officially published on August 31 in 2019, excluded 1.9 million genuine citizens of Assam. Had the NRC been prepared with total impartiality, not a single citizen would have been dropped from the final NRC,” the memorandum read.

More than 19 lakh of the 3.29 crore applicants in Assam were left out of the final NRC that was published on August 31, 2019 to conclude a Supreme Court-monitored exercise that took five years and Rs 1,220 crore.
