Work on second footbridge on Golf Course Road to start in a month
Gurgaon: Work on the second foot overbridge along Golf Course Road is set to begin within a month, with the pedestrian crossing planned near La Lagune. A GMDA official said the contracting agency has been brought on board and the design has been finalised. The La Lagune location was not part of the original proposal. Instead, it was supposed to be constructed near the Times Centre. The project is expected to take at least a year to complete and is being undertaken by DLF Foundation under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
The stretch near La Lagune is among the city's black spots and witnesses accidents primarily due to speeding, compounded by insufficient signage and speed control measures. The stretch sees heavy vehicular movement throughout the day, with office-goers, residents and support staff frequently crossing the road amid speeding traffic.Residents of societies along the corridor have long demanded safer pedestrian infrastructure, pointing out that the absence of designated crossing points forces people to navigate multiple lanes of fast-moving vehicles. "Crossing this road during peak hours is risky. Some plots of our colony are located on the other side, and residents often have to use cars even for short distances just to cross safely. A foot overbridge will bring much-needed relief," said Kalyan Singh Sandhu, RWA president of Saraswati Enclave. In Oct 2024, the site became a bone of contention between the metropolitan authority and the developer after a table-top crossing was constructed there on the recommendation of the district road safety committee. The structure, designed to slow down traffic for safer pedestrian passage, was dismantled shortly after due to objections from the developer, who argued that it could inadvertently promote jaywalking on the busy thoroughfare. The first foot overbridge on this corridor was constructed at Chakkarpur and became operational in Nov 2024. Officials said the structure improved pedestrian movement in that stretch by providing a safe crossing option. According to the DLF Foundation, the facility recorded over 3.46 lakh public footfalls in FY 2024-25.The upcoming foot overbridge near La Lagune is expected to follow similar design standards, with lifts and stair access to ensure convenience for all users. Additionally, proper illumination will be done at the pedestrian crossing to ensure safety.Proposed in 2020, the metropolitan authority originally planned five overbridges on Golf Course Road, but residents of Vipul Belmonte resisted one of the proposed structures near their apartment complex. Subsequently, GMDA gave in-principle approval for four structures—Bristol Chowk, Times Centre, MPD Tower and Paras Downtown.
