MARGAO: Criticizing the home ministry and police for failing to provide protection to women in Goa, youth Congress president Valanka Alemao, who visited Canacona on Saturday in connection with the murder of 46-year-old Vijaya Shashi Pagi Kankonkar, called for increased police patrolling.
Alemao condemned the incident which she said was disturbing the peaceful society in Goa and that she would continue to agitate and not rest until better infrastructure is put in place that would ensure a safer environment to live in.
The deceased resident of Tarir, Rajbag, was found with her clothes torn, murdered in the bushes at Mastimol, Canacona, on Friday evening.
Valanka said that villagers were demanding increased and constant patrolling especially in the evening and said that the women in particular were frightened after the incident.
Sources said that the deceased fish vendor used to walk her way from Ponsulem to Mastimol through a forested area to sell fish and return to her Rajbag home by 1pm.
"The law and order situation in Goa is deteriorating day by day as you can see. Safety of women is a big concern,"said Alemao.
She further expressed shock that a middle aged lady could be attacked and said that such incidents expose the failure of the police. There are no deterrents put in place to prevent such crimes from repeating, she said.
