Navelim MLA assures support for zilla bhavan

Margao: Newly elected MLA from Navelim, Ulhas Tuenkar on Wednesday assured zilla panchayat members of South Goa of his support for construction of a zilla panchayat (ZP) bhavan in the district. He also said that he would strive to get more funds for zilla panchayats from the government.

Tuenkar was speaking after being felicitated by the South Goa ZP at its meeting for his victory in the assembly elections. Cortalim independent MLA Antonio Vas was also felicitated. Both Tuenkar and Vas were members of the South Goa AP when they contested the February 14 polls.

The South Goa ZP has already passed a proposal for construction of a bhavan and has identified some sites.

The demand for construction of an independent zilla panchayat bhavan first came to the fore in late 2010. The then ZP body led by Maria Rebello had constituted a committee to identify and shortlist suitable sites for the zilla panchayat building. Though some 5000 sq of land at Ambaji was soon identified for the purpose, the proposal had remained grounded.
