Calangute taxi owners oppose cab aggregator plan

Calangute: Taxi owners in a meeting at Calangute on Monday opposed the transport department’s proposal to bring all taxis under cab aggregators in Goa.

Activist Sudip Tamhankar, representing taxi owners, said most taxi owners prefer self-employment over joining cab aggregators and claimed app-based taxis have failed in some countries.

“We are open to new technologies, but the transport department should have open discussions with our stakeholders before going ahead with any new mechanisms,” he said.

“The transport department had called us for meetings, but it appears that they are not interested in resolving our issues. Despite our opposition, they have announced new proposals to bring taxis under aggregators,” he said.

Members of various taxi unions, rent-a-cab, rent-a-bike, and rickshaw unions attended the meeting.
