Calangute resort demolishes illegal coastal structures
Calangute: In compliance with court orders, the owners of Nazri resort at Sauntawaddo, Calangute, demolished illegal portions of the resort on Tuesday. The property is co-owned by local MLA Michael Lobo.In Dec 2025, the Bombay high court issued a notice to M/s Elite Builders and Lobo in a petition filed by Assagao resident Desmond Alvares over non-compliance with demolition orders. The notice came seven years after the 2018 demolition order, more than a year after the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal, and four months after a notice to execute the order was issued. The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) directed M/s Elite Builders to demolish the illegal structures constructed in a protected coastal regulation zone in blatant violation of environmental laws and regulations in 2018.The petition, filed in Dec, sought directions to the GCZMA and the state to ensure demolition and recover costs. It also directed GCZMA to use the same for environmental restoration and to prevent further ecological degradation of the coastal belt. However, the resort owners sought time till the end of the tourist season to not cause inconvenience to nearby tourism businesses. They had also undertaken to demolish the illegal structures at their cost. The tourist season ended on Sunday, following which the demolition was carried out.
