Bicholim: Chief minister
Pramod Sawant on Wednesday inaugurated the restored 17th-century Sanquelim Fort, a historic structure built by the Sawant Bhonsles, the rulers of Sawantwadi, which had remained neglected for years.
The restoration, carried out by the department of archaeology at a cost of Rs 3 crore, is part of state govt’s broader effort to preserve and revive heritage sites across Goa.
Speaking at the inauguration, Sawant said govt has prioritised the conservation of structures with historical significance. He also announced plans to establish centres of the National School of Drama and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts at the fort.
“The fort will become a hub for theatre, arts and cultural preservation,” Sawant said.
He added that while Sanquelim has not traditionally been a major tourist destination, the restored fort is expected to attract visitors and history enthusiasts alike.
The renovated complex features a landscaped garden, a library, a recreation centre for senior citizens, and a small restaurant.
