Ghaziabad: A 23-year-old woman was arrested on Monday from Prahlad Garhi junction for allegedly stealing cash and valuables from a banquet hotel during a wedding ceremony.
According to the police, the woman has been identified as Kumari Akshita, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, but her associate is absconding.
Akshita also has cases registered against her in Meerut and Sihani Gate police stations for similar crimes and was also arrested by Sihani Gate police in 2018.
Depal Singh Pundir , SHO of Indirapuram police station, told TOI that on the night of November 2, Akshita had robbed a bag of gold ornaments worth Rs 3 lakh. “She had entered the Numberdar farmhouse in Vasundhara area where a marriage reception was underway and made away with a bag containing gold ornaments and cash,” he said.
Police said that Akshita and her aunty would properly dress up and enter any function organised in a banquet hall or farmhouse. “They spent considerable time at the venue and made themselves familiar and comfortable. They dressed themselves in wedding finery and mingled with the crowd and gradually gained proximity to the families and targeted the person who was keeping the bag containing the ‘shagun’ envelopes or other valuables. After fleeing from the venue, they used to sell those ornaments to a jewellery shop on the pretext of needing cash,” SHO said.
“A team has been formed to trace Akshita’s aunty,” police said. An FIR has been registered against the duo under sections 379 (theft) and 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the IPC. Akshita was produced in court on Monday and sent to custody.
