Jumbo damages 300 banana trees in STR

ERODE: A wild elephant damaged more than 300 banana trees planted on two acres of farmland near Thalavadi in the STR here on early Monday morning.


The land was cultivated by K Malloo, 45, from Thalavadi.

“I was planning to harvest bananas in a couple of days and sell them. But the elephant damaged hundreds of trees in the process of eating some of them. I now face a loss of ?2 lakh,” said Malloo. Earlier, the farmer and fellow villagers managed to chase away the elephant three hours after it entered the field. The farmer also alerted forest officials, who inspected the farmland and assured Malloo that they would submit a report to the government seeking compensation for his loss.
