Schools remain shut in Aizawl as incessant rain lashes Mizoram

Schools in Aizawl district remained closed for the second consecutive day on Friday as relentless rainfall continued to batter Mizoram, triggering landslides in several parts of the state, officials said.

The northeastern hilly state has been witnessing incessant downpours since Wednesday. According to rainfall data, Lawngtlai district recorded the highest precipitation at 112.50 mm, followed by Serchhip with 70 mm, Kolasib with 63.70 mm, and Aizawl close behind at 63.60 mm.

Officials from the State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department confirmed that landslides were reported in the Aizawl region and other areas, leading to the blockage of highways at multiple locations. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the rain continues to pose risks of further landslides and disruption.

Manipur weather Live: Heavy rain lashes Manipur, waterlogging reported in several areas of Imphal

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days in Manipur has led to significant waterlogging in various parts of Imphal on Friday, disrupting daily activities, according to official reports.

Several areas in Imphal West district, including Kakwa, Thangmeiband and Sagolband, experienced waterlogging, causing considerable disruption to traffic flow.
Rivers flowing through the Imphal valley, including the Imphal river and Serou river, have shown substantial increase in their water levels.

The IMD had previously issued warnings of heavy rainfall for multiple Manipur regions, particularly the southern districts of Chandel, Churachandpur, Pherzawl, and certain areas of Kakching and Thoubal districts.

The IMD's Meteorological Centre in Imphal reported that Moreh, the border town, received the highest rainfall of 102 mm on Thursday, with Kamjong recording 96 mm, Chandel 76 mm, and Ukhrul 60.8 mm.

Assam weather Live: Guwahati reels under torrential rain; authorities on high alert

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), adverse weather conditions were predicted over Assam on May 28, with western and southern regions expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the following 2-3 days.

The Northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast, experienced a well-marked low-pressure system that was projected to shift northwards and develop into a depression over the North Bay of Bengal. This weather system was expected to bring substantial rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across numerous districts in Assam.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued alerts regarding potential waterlogging in Guwahati city due to continuous rainfall, which could affect traffic flow and increase the likelihood of falling trees and localised landslides.

Local authorities are maintaining vigilant oversight of the situation with emergency services ready to respond. Heavy rain triggers landslides in Nilgiris; trees uprooted, roads affected

Several landslides were reported in the Nilgiris on Thursday as incessant rain and winds battered the hill district for the sixth consecutive day. In the 24 hours ended 7am on Thursday, Avalanche recorded the highest rainfall in the district at 190mm. Trees were uprooted at Upper Kodappamund, Manjanakorai and on Kallahatty Road. The Nilgiris, which usually receives 900mm to 1,000mm of rain during the southwest monsoon (JuneSept), has in the past six days received 305mm, or around 30% of the usual amount.

The city experienced a slight rise in daytime temperature; however, an overcast sky in the late afternoon, accompanied by gusty winds and short-duration rain in many areas by early evening, provided some relief. Safdarjung recorded a peak wind speed of 41 km/h, while Palam saw winds reaching 46 km/h. Several localities witnessed brief spells of rain, with Safdarjung, Palam, and other areas recording traces. Admin on alert, disaster management helpline activated: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

CM Mamata Banerjee said all preparations have been taken in anticipation of heavy rain. On Thursday, she held a meeting at Nabanna while state chief secretary Manoj Pant spoke virtually with officials from the district to block levels. “The administration is on alert to tackle the disaster. Instructions have been given to keep adequate relief supplies in the districts. People from low-lying areas are to be moved to relief camps if necessary. A disaster management department helpline was activated from the block level to Nabanna,” Banerjee said. “Fishermen have been advised not to go to sea for two days, and tourists have been asked not to go into the sea during this period,” she said.

Ahmedabad records 27.3mm of rain, temperature dips

The city received 27.3 mm of rain in 24 hours ending 6am on Thursday. It recorded 24.3mm in the wee hours alone — 14mm between 2am and 3am and 10.3mm from 3am to 4am. Dudheshwar recorded the maximum rainfall of 57.5 mm, followed by Ranip (56.5mm) and Gota and Usmanpura with 42.5mm each. Zone-wise, both Central and West received 41.5 mm of rain in the downpour, which was significant for the season. The city has received 115.7mm of unseasonal rain this year. Elsewhere in the state, Modasa in Aravalli received 60mm, followed by 55mm in Patan’s Saraswati, and 50mm in both Patan and Anklav in Anand. In total, 89 talukas received at least 1mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 6am.

A deep depression that crossed over to the land near Sagar Island on Thursday triggered moderate rain in Kolkata. The Alipore weather office recorded 15.5 mm rainfall till Thursday night. Met officials said the system is likely to trigger more rain till Friday afternoon. While this weather system accelerated the monsoon’s arrival in North Bengal on Thursday, six days in advance, Met officials have yet to forecast monsoon’s date with Kolkata. The city woke up to a mostly sunny morning, with cloud cover in between.

Boipara gets water jitters early, sellers rush to save stocks with sheets & raised platforms

As rain lashed Kolkata on Thursday, well before the official onset of the monsoon season, booksellers in Kolkata’s College Street, also known as Boipara, scrambled to protect their stock. Plastic sheets went up like emergency canopies, bricks were stacked to raise platforms, and waterproof wraps were hurriedly pulled over piles of books. Many book traders also started wrapping the books properly before shutting shop, fearing overnight downpour and flooding with the meteorological department predicting more rain ahead. Not just that, shelves are being rearranged so that valuable stock moves to higher shelves. This time, rain pain arrived early for the vendors at the book hub. “We usually try to protect ourselves from the scorching heat while doing business during this time of the year, not fight therain,” said Pratap Das, secretary of the Sir Ashutosh Booksellers’ Association. “We have instructed all the traders to move the stock to safety if it rains more intensely,” he added.
