LG pushes for coordinated action against pollution in NCR
New Delhi: With a few months remaining before the onset of winter when Delhi’s air quality worsens, lieutenant governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday asked agencies across National Capital Region to coordinate and implement a time-bound roadmap to curb pollution.
During a meeting with Commission for Air Quality Management chairperson Rajesh Verma, Sandhu reviewed pollution-control measures and identified road dust, vehicular emissions, biomass burning and industrial pollution as the major contributors to poor air quality. Stressing that air pollution is a regional challenge requiring regional solutions, he called for coordinated action by agencies across Delhi and neighbouring states to ensure measurable improvements before winter.
According to LG’s office, the meeting focused on strengthening pollution control measures, improving inter-agency coordination and formulating long-term strategies. Sandhu emphasised aggressive dust-mitigation efforts, including wider deployment of mechanised road sweeping machines, time-bound repair of roads and prompt disposal of desilted material.
LG observed that road dust remained a critical but often underestimated source of pollution. Underlining that most of the responsible agencies operate within the city, he stressed the need for better route monitoring, increased roadside plantations and optimum utilisation of dust-control infrastructure.
Sandhu also emphasised the transition to cleaner mobility through deployment of electric buses and wider adoption of electric vehicles. He called for stricter monitoring of industrial emissions across NCR and sustained efforts to address stubble burning in neighbouring states.
LG said tackling air pollution was no longer a matter of choice but an imperative that could not be postponed.
