NEW DELHI: A Bangladeshi national, Munavar Ali (27), was detained at the airport after the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) received a call claiming a terrorist was aboard the flight on Monday afternoon.
Ali was apprehended soon after the Biman Airlines plane touched down. Initial probe has revealed that Ali was travelling on a fake passport.
"The passport is in the name of Ata-Ur-Rehman (33). During interrogation Ali claimed to have got the passport from a travel agent in Dhaka. The agent had removed the original photograph from the passport and affixed his," an officer said.
Ali had been deported from Saudi Arabia in 1999, the officer claimed. He worked in a hotel there, and was sent back after he had a fight with his local agent. "The agent detained his passport after the two had a dispute. Ali went to the embassy which later deported him," the officer said.
Ali said he was going to Lisbon to work there as a mason. His agent in Dhaka had got him the job, he claimed. He had to catch a Lufthansa flight from Indira Gandhi International airport at 2 am on Tuesday.
According to the police, Rehman, the original passport holder, has already travelled to Lisbon on several occasions. He, too, is a resident of Dhaka. "Ali has given us his and Rehman''s residence addresses. We are yet to ascertain them," the police said.
On Monday at 12 pm, the DGCA got a call stating that the person sitting on seat number 24A was a terrorist and had links with a terrorist organisation. The DGCA immediately informed the police.
Security was tightened at the airport and a team of commandos was also deployed there. The Biman Airlines plane landed at the domestic airport at 12.30 pm. A joint team of intelligence bureau, local police and other intelligence agencies arrested Ali while he was inside the plane, waiting to disembark.
"We have informed the Bangladesh embassy which is verifying Ali''s antecedents," the officer said. NSG was also called to the airport.
