83-year-old man arrested for firing at two people

CUTTACK: Two persons, including a woman, were injured when an 83 year old man opened fire at them.The accused Purna Chandra Mohanty had fired bullets from his licensed single barrel gun leaving two persons Parbati Das and Subhra Mohanty injured. The incident occurred at busy Deula Sahi in broad daylight triggering panic in the area. Das has sustained splinter injury on his head while one splinter has hit Subhra’s hand. Both of them have been undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
“Both the patients are out of danger and their condition is stable,” said doctor of SCB. Police said Mohanty, a retired government
employee, had a long standing property dispute with his neighbor and Das being an influential person in the area was supporting his Mohanty’s rival. On Tuesday morning, Mohanty and Das had an altercation and in a fit of rage the old man brought gun from his
house and fired at the later. A lady sitting in a nearby shop was also injured as one splinter also hit her.
“The accused has been arrested and gun has also been seized. Probe in on,” said DCP, Sanjeev Arora.
