Salem: Two people drowned in the
Cauvery River at the foot of the Mettur Dam on Sunday.
Police said Susilkumar, 17, son of Mani from Periyampatti in Dharmapuri district, went to bathe in the river along with his relatives. He accidentally ventured deep into the water and was swept away, as he did not know swimming. Efforts by his relatives to rescue him were in vain.
On being alerted, fire and rescue personnel, along with local police, launched a search operation. “During the search for the boy, we recovered the body of an unidentified man, estimated to be around 40 years old,” said a police officer from Mettur station. After prolonged efforts, rescuers later retrieved Susilkumar’s body as well.
Police took custody of both bodies and sent them for postmortem at the Mettur Government Hospital.
Two separate cases have been registered, and further investigation is on.
