COIMBATORE: Police personnel stopped a 60-year-old autorickshaw driver from immolating himself at the district collectorate here on Monday. A police officer said P K Radhakrishnan poured kerosene over him and tried to immolate himself as he was allegedly humiliated by nationalised bank officials.

Radhakrishnan said, “In July, I tried to withdraw 2,500 using my debit card from an ATM kiosk at Vadavalli. While I received a message that the money was deducted from my savings account, the ATM failed to dispense the cash. So I took up the matter with bank officials, but they failed to look into it and humiliated me. All my efforts to get back the money from the bank went in vain.”

Radhakrishnan even filed a complaint with the cybercrime wing of the Vadavalli police, but to no avail. “Wherever I went seeking help, I was insulted. I saved that money even as I was struggling to scrape by with my daily collection, and now it is lost.” After stopping Radhakrishnan, police personnel pacified him and received a petition from him addressed to collector G S Sameeran seeking help.
