Three arrested for murder of guest worker

Chennai: A day after a guest worker from Assam was lynched and killed by a mob near Vengal in Thiruvallur district, police arrested three people in connection with the incident.

Jayakumar, 30, his father Ravi, 55, and Sivakumar, 45 have been held, while search is on for others.

Police said Prosenjit Das, 35, of Kamrup district in Assam was among six guest workers who had arrived in Amanambakkam village under Thamaraipakkam panchayat earlier this week in search of jobs. The group was staying in a rented house in Thamaraipakkam.

On Friday evening, a drunk Prosenjit went to RR Kandigai village near Vengal, and stepped into a house, apparently seeking water. As the woman refused since he was drunk, the man attempted to misbehave with her. Even after the woman locked the door, Prosenjit continued knocking and damaged window panes using a knife. When she called for help, her relatives and other villagers confronted Prosenjit and assaulted him.

Later, his friends came in search of him and found him lying unconscious with his hands tied behind his back. On information, Vengal police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Tiruvallur GH for postmortem.
