Akin to the

wave of volunteerism

witnessed during the floods last year, hours after

Vardah hit the city

, residents fanned out on the streets removing uprooted trees and forming teams to aid corporation workers.

Residents formed

WhatsApp groups

to coordinate relief work. Neelankarai resident Deepak Venkatachalam, member of one such `emergency response team', said, “The water bodies here had overflowed and entered people's homes. It was like the last year floods, only it was worse this time“ Basith of Arappor Iyakkam was part of a group of volunteers from several organisations who helped people commute. “ A pregnant woman was stuck at the Central station, we got her home to Madipakkam,“ said Basith.

Infamous for their road blockades, inmates of the Ambedkar Law College hostels stepped up to direct traffic on the Chamiers Road signal, upholding the spirit of volunteerism in the city.
