CHENNAI: The husband of 38-year-old Kavitha Kumari, found dead in her Thoraipakkam house on Wednesday, got his nephew to murder her, investigators have found. S Arasu who wanted 30,000 to pay his estranged wife, approached his uncle. Veerappan, who sells fish in Teynampet and is also a small-time moneylender, agreed to give him the sum but said he had to kill Kavitha in return, police said.
The two men are now cooling their heels in prison.
After Kavitha’s body was discovered on August 21, police began making inquiries. Some of the couple’s neighbours in Choolima Nagar in Thoraipakkam told them that Veerappan was a cruel man who often fought with his wife and accused her of having affairs.
Kavitha, a native of Kollam in Kerala, fell in love with Veerappan and they got married 20 years ago after she graduated from SIET College in Teynampet. Since then, police said, Veerappan continued to harass Kavitha.
The fish shop owner, who was himself involved with several women, decided to eliminate Kavitha as she was constantly asking him to mend his ways. Recently, his nephew Arasu approached Veerappan and sought 30,000. Arasu, who was living with a fruit vendor named Muniammal, wanted the sum to pay off his wife Manimala who had lodged a police complaint.
Veerappan promised to help Arasu but wanted the younger man to do away with Kavitha first. He also agreed to protect him in case he was arrested. After the plan was hatched behind some fish shops, Veerappan asked his nephew not to call him until the job was done.
On August 21, Arasu went to Kavitha’s house and she began complaining about her husband. Arasu asked Kavitha to show the couple photo album. When she went in to bring the album, Arasu followed. He strangled her, cut her throat and fled.
Soon, Veerappan returned and pretended that he had found his wife dead. Some of their neighbours told police they saw Veerappan’s relative in the house. Asked about this, Veerappan said his nephew Arasu might have come to seek money. Police then questioned Arasu who revealed the truth.
After Arasu sought Veerappan 30,000 to pay his estranged wife, Veerappan told Arasu he could help him if Arasu would kill Veerappan’s wife Kavitha.
