Murder of Rewari fertiliser trader: Suspect held after brief encounter
Rohtak: A man suspected to be involved in the murder of a Rewari-based fertiliser trader was arrested by the Rewari police after a brief encounter late Monday night.The arrested accused, who received bullet injuries to his legs in the retaliatory action by the police, has been identified as Jaibhagwan alias Sonu Mahal, a resident of Pinana village in Sonipat.
According to the police, Sonu was the main accused in the murder of Mohan, a fertiliser trader from Bahala village in Rewari. Sonu has more than 21 criminal cases registered against him and carried a reward of Rs 20,000, the police added.The encounter took place on the Bhatshana road after a CIA team from Dharuhera and members of the Gurugram STF signalled the suspect, who was riding a motorcycle, to stop. The suspect, as per the police, opened fire at the teams and in the retaliatory action, he was hit in both legs. Sonu was subsequently arrested and admitted to the civil hospital for treatment.Sonu fired five rounds at the teams, hitting CIA in charge Yogesh Hooda and Gurugram STF sub-inspector Vivek. However, the two were saved by their bulletproof jackets, said the police. A case has been registered at Dharuhera police station against Sonu. He has been charged under various sections of the law, including attempt to murder and provisions of the Arms Act.Police sources said Sonu entered the crime world nearly two decades ago. The first case against him was registered in July 2003 at Gohana police station.Cases against him are said to be spread across Gohana, Jind (Julana), Sirsa (Khera Chopta), Bahadurgarh and Jhajjar in Haryana, besides Delhi areas such as Narela, Begumpur and South Rohini.Of the 21 cases registered against him, police said 10 were for murder, while others involved attempt to murder and robbery.Police sources further claimed that Sonu earlier worked as an associate of the Kala Jathedi gang, but split from the group after differences linked to a case in which he was a witness.Mohan, a resident of Bahala, ran a fertiliser and seed shop. He was shot dead on Dec 23 by the armed assailants who arrived in an SUV, said the police.
