AAP sweeps over 50% seats in Mohali civic polls
Chandigarh: The serving Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) registered a sweeping victory in the local bodies elections across Mohali district, tightening its grip over the urban political landscape by winning a majority of seats in several municipal corporations and councils.
Counting of votes for the elections held on May 26 was conducted on Thursday amid tight security arrangements at various counting centres established across the district. Results for 168 wards, including two wards where candidates were elected unopposed, were declared during the counting process.
With more than 50% seats in the Municipal Corporation Mohali going in favour of AAP, the party is now set to form the municipal body with ease. Political circles are also abuzz with speculation that son of sitting AAP MLA Kulwant Singh, Sarabjeet Singh Samana, could be sworn in as the next mayor of Mohali.
Deputy commissioner/district election officer Komal Mittal said the counting process remained peaceful. She added that out of 50 MC wards, AAP got 26 out of 49 wards declared till late night. Congress got 12 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal got four, BJP bagged six, independent candidates got four. The result of ward number 23 is pending.
Congress candidate Baljit Kaur from Ward No. 37 recorded the highest victory margin in Mohali city by winning her seat with a margin of 882 votes. Among other notable victories, Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Ranjeet Kaur defeated her rival in Zirakpur Ward No. 20 by a margin of 996 votes, registering one of the biggest wins in the district. In Nayagaon Ward No 12, BJP candidate Navjot Singh secured victory with a margin of 495 votes.

AAP delivered a strong performance in the Zirakpur Municipal Council elections by winning the majority of seats in the 31-member civic body. The party managed to secure 16 seats, exactly the number required for a majority, making the contest highly competitive till the final stages of counting.
According to the final results, AAP candidates won 16 seats, while Shiromani Akali Dal secured six seats. The BJP and Congress won four seats each, while one independent candidate also emerged victorious.
The results have paved the way for AAP to take control of the Zirakpur Municipal Council.
BOX: BJP Retains Dominance in Nayagaon
In Municipal Council Nayagaon, the Bharatiya Janata Party retained its dominance by winning 16 out of the total 21 wards.
The Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress managed to secure one seat each, while independent candidates won three seats. The results reaffirmed BJP’s strong voter base in the area despite AAP’s dominance elsewhere in the district.
BOX: AAP Set to Form Council in Dera Bassi
AAP also emerged victorious in Municipal Council Dera Bassi by winning 12 out of 19 wards, including one ward where a candidate was elected unopposed.
The Congress won two seats, while Shiromani Akali Dal secured three seats. The BJP managed to win two seats in the council.
With a comfortable majority, AAP is expected to form the council and appoint its President in Dera Bassi.
BOX: Tight Contest Between AAP and Congress in Kurali
The Municipal Council Kurali witnessed a close political contest between AAP and Congress.
Out of 17 wards, AAP secured six seats while Congress followed closely with five seats. Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP won one seat each, while independent candidates registered victory in four wards, making independents a crucial factor in the council’s power equation.
BOX: Lalru Municipal Council Also Goes to AAP
AAP continued its winning momentum in Lalru Municipal Council by securing 12 out of 17 wards, including one unopposed seat.
Congress won two seats, while Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP secured one seat each. One independent candidate also emerged victorious.
The results ensured a clear majority for AAP in the council.

In Municipal Council Banur, AAP secured a decisive victory by winning 10 out of 13 wards.
The Congress won the remaining three seats, while other parties failed to open their account in the council.
