Koraput: A fully solar-powered reading centre inspired by community learning spaces in Brazil has been established at Penakam village under Ramanaguda block of Rayagada district, offering rural students and youth access to a modern learning environment.
Rayagada district collector Ashutosh Kulkarni, said, "Quality education should not be limited by geography. Every village deserves spaces where young minds can learn, explore and grow. This initiative demonstrates how sustainable technology and community participation can come together to create meaningful educational opportunities. We hope this model inspires similar efforts across the district and beyond."
The project was undertaken under the guidance of the district administration and implemented by the Ramanaguda block administration. "Around Rs 4.5 lakh has been spent in setting up the reading centre designed on the lines of innovative community libraries and solar-powered book stalls seen in parts of Brazil," said Ramanaguda BDO Pradyumna Mandal.
The library’s complete reliance on solar energy ensures uninterrupted lighting even during power outages. Constructed with transparent fibre panels, it allows ample natural light during the day, while solar-powered illumination makes it functional after sunset.
Chief development officer-cum-executive officer of zilla parishad, Rayagada, Akshaya Kumar Khemundu, played a key role in conceptualising the project. "We wanted to create a vibrant knowledge hub where students, youth and villagers could come together to read, learn and exchange ideas. The overwhelming response from the community shows that there is a strong need for such spaces in rural areas. If this model continues to succeed, we will explore its expansion to other parts of the district with active community participation and ownership."
The reading centre houses a growing collection of books sourced through the community-driven campaign. Along with general literature, it offers competitive examination guides, reference materials and educational books free of cost to students and job aspirants. The gram panchayat has taken responsibility for the centre's upkeep, maintenance and security.
Ashok Naik, who is preparing for govt jobs, said, "Facilities like this were previously available only in towns. Having a well-lit reading centre with quality books in our own village has encouraged many students to spend more time studying and preparing for their future."
