World Brain Tumour Day: Experts Call for Chronic Care Frameworks

Bhopal: Ahead of World Brain Tumour Day on June 8, specialists are urging stronger support systems as brain tumour care increasingly resembles long-term chronic disease management.

While advances in precision oncology, molecular profiling and genomic testing are improving survival rates, experts caution that conditions like gliomas demand sustained clinical oversight and caregiver involvement.

Bhopal-based neurosurgeon Dr Nitin Garg stressed that malignant gliomas often require repeated cycles of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and imaging. He noted that treatment costs in cities such as Bhopal average Rs 5-6 lakh, excluding follow-up expenses, with families facing hidden burdens like extended travel, prolonged hospital stays and loss of income as caregivers leave jobs. Under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, most brain tumours are covered, offering crucial financial relief.

Dr Bharat Bhosale highlighted the growing role of genomic profiling and precision medicine in tailoring therapies. While modern neuro-oncology integrates advanced diagnostics and targeted treatments, he cautioned that affordability remains a barrier to widespread access.
