Months after 19yo cousin molested, univ student shot dead for filing FIR

Pilibhit: Months after a 24-year-old nursing student filed an FIR against a man and six members of his family for allegedly molesting his 19-year-old cousin, the complainant was shot dead with a rifle at a village under Deuria police station in Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday evening. Following the murder, Pilibhit SP Abhishek Yadav suspended SHO Digambar Singh, area in-charge officer Abhishek Kumar and beat constable Akhilesh Kumar for their laxity in acting against the accused in that case.The victim was a second-year student of general nursing and midwifery (GNM) diploma course at Rohilkhand University in Bareilly. His cousin was allegedly molested by a youth of the same village on April 13 when she was on her way to college in Bisalpur. The molester had been constantly stalking her for months, and when the matter was reported to his family by the university student that day, they got annoyed and barged into the girl's house and assaulted her and her family members in the evening.On a complaint by the girl, an FIR was lodged under various BNS sections, including 74 (criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) on April 15 against the alleged molester and six members of his family.The girl's father told the media that the police neither arrested any accused nor filed a chargesheet despite repeated requests to the SHO and the Bisalpur CO Pragati Chauhan. He alleged that police's failure to act in the case emboldened the accused.Since then, enmity between the two families has been growing, and on Tuesday a heated argument ensued after the accused's family demanded that the FIR be withdrawn. And in the evening, a group of about eight armed people from the accused side barged into the girl's house and shot her cousin in the head with a rifle. The assailants also brutally beat the women in the house and fled.SP Yadav said six police teams have been constituted to nab the accused. A departmental inquiry against the three suspended cops has been initiated, he said.Meanwhile, new SHO of Deuria, Gautam Singh, said a fresh FIR was lodged against eight named accused, including the alleged molester's mother on Wednesday under BNS sections 103 (1) (murder), 333 (house trespass) and 3 (5) (criminal act committed by several people in furtherance of common intention).
