AURANGABAD: Within hours of ToI report (see in graphic) about malfunctioning of
traffic signals
at busy squares and important junctions in different parts of the city, the civic body has swung into action and undertaken a rigorous maintenance drive.
Traffic lights at
Kranti Chowk
and five other important places have been repaired in the first phase of the drive.
Aurangabad municipal commissioner Omprakash Bakoria said that all important traffic signals in the city that need maintenance will be repaired during the drive. “It has been decided that the maintenance of traffic lights would be done in-house now. As a part of the resolve, spare-parts and other gadget required for repairing traffic lights were brought from Pune. We are planning to keep proper inventory for future needs. The whole maintenance exercise will cost us less than what we used to pay when the work was outsourced by issuing contracts to a third party,” he said.
Sharad Advant
, general secretary, advocacy group
Marathwada Janta Vikas Parishad
, said, “Aurangabad Municipal Corporation should realise that maintenance is an ongoing process. It is good for public at large that the civic chief has kept his promise and undertook maintenance without wasting time. It should ensure that traffic signals operate smoothly in future too and for that purpose maintenance has to be accorded top priority,” he said.
He also reiterated the demand for installation of pedestrian signals at important places. “Authorities should understand that the roads are not built for vehicles alone and pedestrians have an equal right on it. To ensure safety of pedestrian, signals are a must,” Advant said.
Bakoria said that pedestrian signals will be installed at desired places as a part of bettering the road-related infrastructure. “It is true that city roads do not have pedestrian signals and the same would be installed shortly,” he said.
