TIRUPATI: In a big setback for the ruling YSRCP in Nellore district, right ahead of the 2024 general elections, Rajya Sabha MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy resigned from the RS membership as well as from the primary membership of the YSRCP citing personal reasons on Wednesday.

In a letter addressed to Chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Vemireddy said he was stepping down from the YSRCP district president position and was also resigning from the party's primary membership due to personal reasons and urged the YSRCP national president to immediately approve his resignation.

It may be recalled that after getting a go-ahead from the party leadership, the Rajya sabha MP, who was also the YSRCP's Nellore district president, declared himself as the party's Lok Sabha nominee for the Nellore parliament seat in the ensuing elections and kick-started his poll campaign as well.

However, within a few days after the party leadership declared deputy mayor MD Khaleel as the party's nominee for the Nellore city assembly constituency for the upcoming elections, Vemireddy was reportedly pained by the party's unilateral decision taken without consulting him.

After calling off his election campaign and going into the incognito mode for a brief while, Vemireddy finally tendered his resignation to the party chief on Wednesday.

According to sources close to Vemireddy, he is likely to join the Telugu Desam party soon and may get fielded from the Nellore Lok sabha in the ensuing elections.

Though Vemireddy has never contested in a direct election before, his money might could prove to be a game-changer for the party that he will represent in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, TDP politburo member and former minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy invited Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy to join the Telugu Desam through a message on Wednesday.
