Ahmedabad: Prof beaten with pipes on college campus for ‘harassing girl student’
Ahmedabad: A professor in his 50s was allegedly assaulted by about 10 men on a college campus on Ashram Road on Monday morning after being accused of harassing female students, pressuring them into a relationship, and secretly recording their videos, the nature of which is yet to be confirmed. One of those girls raised objections and informed her family, which led to the attack.
The incident occurred around 8.30am when the assailants entered the college premises and attacked the professor with sticks and iron pipes. The attack caused multiple fractures of his hand and leg. The victim, who has been associated with the institution for nearly three decades, underwent surgeries.
Police sources said they learned about the assault after receiving a call from SVP Hospital, where the injured professor was initially taken for treatment.
“One of the girls approached her parents about the professor’s objectionable conduct. Her family members and relatives then came to the college on Monday morning. After observing his movements and finding that the campus had fewer people due to the vacation period, they confronted and attacked him,” a police official said.
Sources said the attackers dragged the professor to the college gate and assaulted him. A colleague who attempted to intervene was also threatened by the girl’s family. Fearing for his safety, he retreated to his office and avoided further confrontation.
After the assault, the professor was rushed to SVP Hospital in Ellisbridge before being shifted to a private hospital in Naranpura for further treatment. Doctors confirmed that he suffered multiple fractures and required surgeries.
The relatives of the girl later went to Navrangpura police and recounted the allegations against the professor. However, neither the injured professor’s family nor the girl’s had lodged a formal complaint until late Monday evening, said Navrangpura police inspector N A Desai.
Police said further action would depend on the complaints received from either side.
