Agartala: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has informed the Tripura government that the state will soon be connected with Delhi by superfast trains besides, regular train services to Silchar, Guwahati and Kolkata.
State transport secretary Samarjit Bhowmik told the media that NFR authorities are trying hard to flag off train services from Agartala after the election results are declared on May 19.
Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu has assured Lok Sabha MPs from Tripura Jitendra Choudhury and Shankar Prasad Datta that the ministry of railways has been working to connect Agartala with the national capital and other important cities by this month.
However, maintenance facility for trains has not been created at Agartala railway station. So, Agartala has to be in the in regular fleet to Silchar till installation of a maintenance yard in September this year.
The Tripura government has been demanding a rail link connecting the state with major cities of the country on a daily basis and to run sufficient local trains connecting North Tripura with West and South Tripura.
For maintenance of long-distance run trains from Tripura, the NF Railway has been working on an alternative arrangement with Northern Railway to provide maintenance facility, said Bhowmik. He added that the NFR is also pursuing with the railway board over the demands of the state.
He, however, pointed out that NFR officials have been working on a war- footing in the hill section of Badarpur-Lumbding route to restore railway service as soon as possible. The NFR has cancelled trains running between Guwahati and Silchar due to heavy rain and landslides that dislocated railway tracks.
