NEW DELHI: LPG sales in May declined by over 19% year-on-year, while petrol and diesel consumption grew 2.8% and 1%, respectively, govt data has revealed.
Consumption of aviation fuel registered year-on-year decline of 0.8% in the month.
Provisional data from Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell showed that LPG sales fell to 2.1 million tonnes (MT) in May this year from 2.6 MT during the same period in 2025. Officials said the decline was largely due to govt-led demand management measures amid disruptions in supply flows and seasonal variations. Compared with 2.2 MT in April this year, LPG sales were down more than 4%.
Given the country's heavy dependence on West Asia for cooking gas supplies, govt restricted LPG supplies to commercial sector, cracked down on sales in grey market, checked diversions and increased the waiting period for refills to manage demand.
Sales of petrol and diesel rose, though marginally. In a statement, Hindustan Petroleum said the growth was driven by strong demand from transportation, agriculture, freight movement and rural activity during the peak summer season.
