Andhra Pradesh cabinet’s decision to grant a power distribution licence to Google, for its $15bn data centre hub in Visakhapatnam, is a significant regulatory development that deserves both credit and scrutiny. Google – operating through its subsidiary Raiden Infotech, in partnership with Adani Group – is the first private company in Andhra to receive such a licence. It can directly procure and distribute electricity for a 1GW campus across three sites in the Visakhapatnam region. And this will have a significant practical effect.
