Hospital holds transcontinental tele-robotic surgeries

Trichy: Dr G Viswanathan hospital performed transcontinental tele robotic surgeries in gynaecology and general surgery on June 4.
A hospital statement said the two were performed between ORSI Academy, Ghent University, Belgium, and Dr G Viswanathan hospital, covering 9,730 kilometres. Operating surgeon Dr Ramya Kalaiselvan from Trichy performed both surgeries remotely using MedBot Toumai Robot from Belgium. The patients remained at Dr G Viswanathan hospital, while the robotic procedures were carried out remotely with the support of on-site surgical team led by Dr K Govindaraj and Dr R Muthuraman.
Both surgeries, including left inguinal hernia TAPP repair, were completed in about 90 minutes, and both patients were discharged on June 6, it added.
