Patna: Three separate deaths of prisoners and detainees in custody in different parts of Bihar within 24 hours have raised concerns over the condition of inmates and the circumstances surrounding custodial deaths.
A 55-year-old inmate lodged in Chune Mandal Jail in Gopalganj district died while being taken to the hospital after his health suddenly worsened on Wednesday morning. The deceased, Irshad Alam, was a resident of Balaha Vishunpura village under Barauli police station area.
Irshad had been lodged in jail since June 4 in connection with a case involving the alleged possession of two passports. Jail authorities said his health deteriorated in the early hours of Wednesday. After initial treatment inside the jail, he was referred to sadar hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. Family members claimed that he had been suffering from high blood pressure and maintained that he had already surrendered the newer passport. Authorities have ordered a postmortem examination, and further investigation is underway.
In another incident in Madhepura, where an undertrial prisoner died during treatment on Tuesday. The deceased, Deepak Kumar (27), son of Niranjan Paswan and a resident of ward no. 24 in Madhepura town, had surrendered before a court in connection with a pending case last week and was subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
According to jail officials, Deepak complained of severe abdominal pain on Monday night and his condition deteriorated rapidly. He was rushed to JNKT Medical College and Hospital after his family was informed, but doctors could not save him. Following his death, relatives and local residents gathered outside the hospital and accused jail authorities of assaulting the prisoner inside the jail. The protest was brought under control after Madhepura and Singheshwar police officials reached the spot and assured a fair investigation. The body was later sent for the postmortem.
A custodial death was reported from Supaul district, where a 25-year-old man allegedly died inside Jadia police station. The deceased, identified as Bittu Kumar of Koreapatti East ward no. 4, had reportedly been handed over to police by his family after they contacted the Dial-112 emergency service, claiming he was intoxicated.
Police said Bittu was under mental stress and allegedly died by suicide late Tuesday night by hanging himself on the police station premises. However, the family rejected the police version and alleged that he was beaten to death while in custody. They pointed to marks on his neck.
The death triggered protests, with family members and local residents blocking State Highway-91 in front of the police station and demanding justice. Supaul SP Sharath R S said the case is being probed from all angles.
